Vanaf 2017 exposeert Simon regelmatig.
Simon Haringa (b.1953) graduated in 1996 from the Dutch Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam.
He works as a photographer, documentary-filmmaker and teacher (audiovisual media).

Central theme in his work is the quest of man for a better and more beautiful world or the loss of it. While in his films people play a major role, the emphasis in his photographic work often is on the surrounding environment. People then seem to occur by accident in the image.

From 2017 Simon exhibits regularly. His work shows a quest for silence and tranquility resulting in abstract images

Zij kijken 'out of the box'.ù

'Gay art' often tends to be depictions of nudity, eroticism, intimacy or activism. Simon and Mark find this too restrictive.Their inspiration is gleaned rather from the juxtaposition of houses and streets, interesting lights and shadows or a forgotten corner. An abandoned object in a deserted landscape will always draw their attention. They see beauty in the mundane.

Simon's paintbrush is his mobile phone. His snapshots of everyday, stationary subjects are like a still-life painting.

Mark choses similar themes and then sets them on the canvas with amazing photographic precision.

These artists were unaware of each other's work until just recently, despite the synergies and their complementary inspiration. Mark and Simon expand the definition of "gay art." Their work is not limited by their sexual preference. Rather, they think 'out of the box'.

The exhibtion is a collection of images, that show how Simon moves about through Amsterdam. They tell a tale of just one of the many people making their way through the city. The collection of photos presents a personal travelogue, illustrated with instant postcards.
The mobile phone makes it possible for him to interact directly with the impressions he gets from his surroundings. He breaks down the urban landscape to the basic elements of form, light and colour. The photos show scenes of serenity, with the occasional human, lost in his or her own thoughts.

AUTO MOBILE
In Auto-Mobile (2011-2015) he takes photo's with a mobile phone. His fascination lies not with the perfect shaping of the image but with coincidence. Not the technical capabilities of a camera or the ideal angle determine the outcome of his photography but his individual point of view. For Simon constantly filtering images always has been an automatism and now he also captures this process. During normal, daily activities he takes visual notes of his surrounding world and collects them in diaries. Light, framing and a zoom-lens are his only tools. A certain unpredictability and the imperfection of the images create estrangement. Therefore they have their own reality and reflect more often a feeling. The diaries are the basis for 2 exhibitions: Amsterdam Mobiel and Amsterdam Mobiel/Stork (2017)
